yesterday at spinning group, several people who had gotten back into cycling complained about the constant close calls and being harrassed by motorists.
while I don't wish that on anyone, I'm kind of like "welcome to my world, everybody.. "

But I still tried to encourage them to ride more, and had some tips on how it still can be fun.

first tip is: always assume that motorists turning right will not respect you, especially trucks.

try to use bikelanes as often as possible.

don't be afraid of rush hour, that's when motorists will be stuck in traffic jams and relatively harmless to you, and cyclists will be moving in big convoys of disciplined riders, giving you safety. it's a pleasure to ride with them!

@distelfliege yeah, after i follow your bike politics a bit, i realised that i check every time whether right turning cars have seen me. but tbh the ratio is quite good, maybe also because our bikelanes are marked very visible...

@knittingsquirrel @distelfliege An roten Ampeln mit Rechtsabbiegern stell ich mich immer dreist sehr weit nach vorne (auch wenn die Radwege nicht eh schon so eingezeichnet sind, dass man weiter vorne halten kann), oder auch mal mitten auf die Autospur ganz vorne, so dass sie mich wirklich nicht übersehen können. Problematisch ist und bleibt es leider immer bei grünen Ampeln oder wenn's gar keine gibt :/

@knittingsquirrel I know the ratio isn't bad, it's quite good here also.

but it's not about ratio, it's about avoiding the few people who would actually hit you.

so if the ratio is 1:100 you still have to always assume that they will not watch out for you.

even if the ratio is 1:1000 you still have to check every time.
