Some day I want to perform a really earnest cover of «Il est mort le soleil»

I've had… not a lot of communication from the senior engineer with whom I'm supposed to be working on this ~6 week project. He usually remotes and hasn't been into the office for 2 weeks, I think, so I can only keep emailing him and occasionally update my manager as I work. I realize it's important for me to develop a certain level of independence, but the sheer lack of feedback makes me nervous about whether I'm doing any of this correctly.

Tonight, I:
- Set up a CentOS Vagrant VM that I can manage through Ansible
- Manually set up Nginx in a separate CentOS VM and confirmed that I could view its default index page in Firefox on the host system

My plan is to develop Ansible playbooks that deploy and update Mastodon & its dependencies automatically, requiring the Ansible user only to edit a couple configuration files to provide details about the server, credentials for connecting, &c.

Last week I set up i3 as a window manager with XFCE, so I can use an XFCE panel and utilities with a tiling window manager. I was already kinda the weird one in the office for not using GNOME and now I'm probably even weirder but honestly I just did it because I was tired of manually arranging my windows side-by-side

The most interesting interviews were with François Clemmons, who played Officer Clemmons on Neighborhood. Rogers said Clemmons couldn't participate in the show if he came out as gay because they would lose their funding, and that was the biggest flaw he shows in the film. But Clemmons also calls Rogers his surrogate father and the first man whoever said he loved Clemmons in a caring/familial way.

Also I was kinda surprised to learn that "Daniel Stripèd Tiger" was sorta… more than just a character in the Land of Make Believe; that puppet always traveled with him to serve as a kind of alter ego facilitate difficult conversations, sometimes even with adults. There was this one interviewer who rudely asked whether he was straight and in that same interview Rogers has Daniel say, "I like you" and the same stuff he always said sincerely

It made me think a lot about what I want to become, what I want this society and this world to become. Fred Rogers was often frustrated there was so much hurt in the world and he didn't feel big enough to make any difference

And there was no hidden agenda there. He did blatantly political stuff about the war in Vietnam (a 1968 episode had this uncanny plot about King Friday building an onerous wall around the castle) and he was a Presbytarian minister, but… that was his whole ministry: making people (particularly children) feel loved and cared for. And that's why he never introduced himself as minister, he wanted to offer that to everyone, not just Christians

I saw it and it gave me a lot of feelings. That man made incredible use of the rare opportunity he got to spend his whole adult life using the medium of television to show children that they deserve to be loved and cared for

Just finally installed an OMEMO plugin for Pidgin. I haven't actually had anyone to chat with on XMPP for ages anyway

I think the unsettling part about it is that at least some of these people have never *not* lived like this, and are totally ignorant about how most people live

Going from a minimum-wage retail environment to the major software company where I'm currently interning has been a major cultural adjustment. People at the store would flip if someone went $10 over budget on breakfast items to serve at the Friday morning meeting. Here I keep getting dragged to team lunches on someone or other's expense account and half the table orders cocktails while whoever's paying jokes about how they'll justify it to accounting
