Earlier this year I hung out in #scuttlebutt for a while . . but there was some glitch - it seems my posts couldn't be seen. Not much fun, being invisible. That's a shame, bcos I think @richdecibels made a good case for using that space, in his New Year blog in Medium.
So here I am, having a go in Mastodon.
@mike_hales that is so sad! sounds like no one was replicating you. Can happen if you follow a pub that didn't follow you back (a bug). If you want to retry, test out some other pubs.
@richdecibels glad to see you here. My hunch is, #mastodon meets my needs better than #scuttlebutt might - the UI is more pleasing, the community perhaps runs in a different way? thanks for the insight, @strypey might follow the tip?
@strypey @mike_hales from my limited perspective I see v different behaviours in the 2 communities. Mastodon feels like little twitter, basically people sharing opinions to confirm tribal affiliations (sorry not sorry). My view on Scuttlebutt is mostly people doing things and sharing their process with other interested parties. Much more DIY atmosphere. Much more geeky and alienating though.
I'm trying to use Mastadon as part of organizing a project. See if it works....
(Also using SSB as part of the same project organizing effort. We'll see which works best, or if they are complementary. And of course more media: Telegram, Gitter, etc etc etc...)
@richdecibels @strypey In my short time lurking in scuttlebutt it did seem closer to the lives of folk (DIY) - geeky but also more like chatting in the local street (or indeed, pub). Nice, but perhaps not my community (geekiness), more like an anthropological field trip!
Remains to be seen if this instance of Mastodon has geeks like me! Well, there's you two ;-p
Really have no interest in tribes, of whatever kind. This kept me off all social media these past 10 years.

I guess on both networks your mileage will vary depending on who you do and don't follow. @richdecibels description of #scuttlebutt sounds exactly like my experience of the #fediverse. I aggressively unfollow people who use it as a megaphone for tribal battle cries (of any kind), and pay little or no attention to the public timelines.
