solidarity with ppl in rojava @paulfree14

should I read something that is shared via ?

no, because:

''To make Medium work, we log user data and share it with processors. To use Medium, you must agree to our Privacy Policy.''

pls leave stop giving support to those venture capitalist @Gargron

@paulfree14 if only the character limit were increased – then we could just write our blog posts on Mastodon! πŸ˜„

@ckeen @paulfree14 Yeah, maybe Eugen should post on Pleroma because I heard the character limit is much higher… 😜

@ckeen @paulfree14 @kensanata "Blogging" opens a whole new can of worms compared to the microblog format. Suddenly, people will want formatting and inline media and other things that don't fit into the narrow pane streaming display format.
In that regard, I think Gargon is right with keeping Mastodon intentionally limited.

@galaxis @paulfree14 @kensanata All true. So get a freedombone or similar system, host the long posts there and send us links....

@galaxis
from myside it's not about mastodon getting that feature or not, but that there are actully free software that is made for blogging that can be used and supported instead of venture capitalist system.
- indieweb (there are attemps to make it also federate with ActivityPub and others
- ghost
- wordpress
- hubzilla (federates with many other plattforms)
...

@ckeen @kensanata

@galaxis @ckeen @paulfree14 Google+ has shown how far you can go with simply supporting emphasis and strong emphasis! There are some terrific long posters on that platform.

@ckeen @kensanata Google+ is also the platform that switched to only showing the first couple of lines from long posts in the stream, and collapses long comments...

@galaxis l if the transition is fast enough (there’s my main gripe!) then I don’t mind.

@paulfree14 This is a generic GDPR notification. A data processor is a GDPR definition. Don't wish to accept? Use browser's Reader Mode. This strips out all JavaScript. Or read the changes in the source repo.

I don't get the hating on Medium. They respect "Do Not Track" browser settings for example. Any suggestions of alternative places where millions regularly go to read articles? Eugen has to reach outside our FOSS bubble sometimes to communicate w/ newbies. We shouldn't hate on him for it.

@david_ross @paulfree14
They absolutely do not support Do Not Track. They take note of it, and tell you that they comply, but the detailed info that you get by clicking through that notice indicates that they absolutely do still track you.

@david_ross @paulfree14
Medium is also a closed silo that profits from other people's work. And their comment system is notably horrible.

I can understand posting to your own blog and syndicating to Medium as a concession to the hellscape we live in.

@david_ross @steckerhalter @paulfree14
I do not claim that they are lying in that document. My claim is that that document gives them sufficient wiggle room to render the claim of complying with DNT a meaningless bit of PR.

@david_ross @paulfree14 it's not hating my dear. it's just that medium has a problem. that is they need to monetize (vc pressure) and the business model they have doesn't leave any other options than user sellout. the longer it takes the worse it gets. remember my words in one year.

@steckerhalter I do agree to some extent. I would resist VC money.

I feel anyone wishing to have "reach" should do so on a number of platforms. Certainly not exclusively on Medium, for that matter.

It is *appropriate* to discuss with Eugen it's a problem that needs fixing. But it's more valuable energy spent suggesting real alternatives. Moaning about people using platforms with millions of users is a problematic delivery mechanism.

And Medium is barely 5 yrs old.

@david_ross no moaning really, just pointing at the issues. the alternative is pretty simple: blog.joinmastodon.org or something. a blog is really not something you need a service for.

@steckerhalter Reaching people where they gather would still be an issue. Hard problems push/pull attention.

IMHO Medium's interesting hybrid business model. Dont need account to read content. SOME is behind paywall as its *author* wants to be paid.

I use tracking protection, Firefox Containers, without signing in, Do Not Track enabled, or even Tor Browser and so on.

But I do this with most sites when I can. Even here I delete 3mth+ archival data.

Healthy to be measuredly cynical, right? πŸ˜†

@david_ross I mostly do the same.

I don't know if people "gather" on Medium and if that's much of a criteria even. I think a blog post can get viral without the need of a platform like Medium.

But in the end we should be proud of what we are doing and sometimes we shouldn't bother too much with the means to achieve something, as long as we do it. So I'm letting you use Medium for now πŸ˜‰

@paulfree14 @Gargron "You've read four toots this month. Let's make it official!"

I click 'back' whenever I end up on Medium because their nag screens are naggy. If they expect people to share/boost/retweet pointers to their content, they (imo) would be better not to put obstacles in the path of people who want to follow those pointers.

@paulfree14 @Gargron Also, pretty sure this enforced-consent behaviour is illegal under the GDPR, so should not be used by or for Europeans at all.
Have been considering a "hooktube for medium" given how common and awful Medium is. Why don't people just use Wordpress or something? :/

@paulfree14 @Gargron I'm not saying you faked this, but you totally did fake it. Nice try.

Mediums privacy policy is written in English. Heres the part on data collection.

@mooshoe
faked what? you're speaking about my framing or that I made a faked screenshot?
I even don't know why I could want to fake it, as their's anyway more to critisice about .

So, I don't get what you're tryn to say.
