@paulfree14 look I know and respect Sam Lavigne too. He applied to be part of Mozfest and had artwork at London's Glass Room with Tactical Tech. But to maintain order and user safety these platforms have rules. Yes protecting the innocent will then protect fuckwits like ICE.

Please don't take the leap that Medium are evil bastards because this is simply not the case. There are plenty of places Sam could have shared that repo. He knows it. And the drama is no doubt purposeful

The argument that they could upload it just somewhere else I find is missing an important point.

It's not just about having the date available on their plattform (if it would be just about that, I wouldn't care at all) but the statement it sends when making it unavailable is having multible other effects, such as giving moral support to #ICE cops, giving legitimacy to their actions...etc.

@paulfree14 yeah yeah 100% A platform like them are transitional platforms. Better than FB. But still a long way to go to fit our mental models of what is a good platform, right?

Did they make an official statement? This whole racist policy of tearing kids from their families is gut wrenchingly a long way down the path of fascism.

As a privacy advocate such a activism tactic makes me hugely uncomfortable. It sets precedence in our own minds of what's acceptable too.

I ment that just deleting the data does give moral support and legitimacy to ICE.

@paulfree14 the recent ForkOff/Together is a good example of the interpretation of what's good for a community when they are not consulted. We run the risk of making decisions in activism that also affect the communities we're trying to protect. Doxxing those ICE staff might have put kids at GREATER risk on the ground.

These things are truly not as clear cut as you sometimes present. I really treasure your energy here. Don't attack good projects. Help them.

yes. thought that means they have a case by case model for it. (or am I missreading that) And is even was public available information, thought even only linkedin data that the ICE cops choosed to make public available.

it's their rules. They can change it when they want.

Medium is a US company so will be bound by US laws too

Fragmenting & E2E encrypting/hashing files across a distributed network is on its way and will have HUGE impact on digital activisim.

But even if it was you simply can't resist facism with completly obeying to a goverment that is moving towards facism.
Yes it would be a risk for medium. But it's nothing compared to those being effected from #ICE.

Let's be clear: we don't endorse nor want to promote medium in any way.

We reluctantly chose to use it because, with this campaign, we are trying to connect with an english speaking audience.

We also have a Facebook Page: our blog automatically displays new posts on it, and it help us reach an enclosed audience.

We don't like to make those choices, and with medium it's an experimentation, and maybe we'll find out it's a mistake (so, really, thanks for your feedback).

But it's not all in black and white: we try to reach out to a wide audience, and somatimes it means not being all clean and try to use proprietary social medias.

We try to be carefull on how we use them, while knowing they always win...
