Can we make this (or another post)
get +500 boosts, proofing that the argument to stay away from the because one can here only reach out to a few is completly wrong?

Wondering how high the reach of this post is?

Well, we don't know. We don't track the users.

You only can see the boosts/fav/reply.
If that's a lot, it reached a lot.

If that made one rethink their opinion here you go:

@paulfree14 I had toots with >100 boosts, favs. I also discover toots from people much more often than on twitter.

I don't care about the 'reach' and raw 'numbers'. I care that on mastodon people reply, discuss and react instead of playing a game to gain views.

@paulfree14 additionally you can see that mastodon has a pretty stable and healthy growth of the infrastructure & user base.

@mulander
well I think it depends for what reason you use something.
I could imagine a indipendent journalist making a research taking about 6 month and writing a paper about it's findings.

Reaching out to people with your findings is part of their work.

So they continue to use (beside journals, newspaper etc.) twitter, facebook and VK to do so.

For that I would say reach is important.

@KEINOS @marsxyz @paulfree14 people have been using the internet for communication & organization long before facebook/twitter.

The history of ICB (a protocol similar to IRC that is still in use) has a passage about an earthquake in '89

@paulfree14
ok we have here already a toot with +400 made by @cassolotl
thought that is a proof that you can gain great reach via

so fuck of 😜

@paulfree14 cybre.space/@lifning/988354099 had a few hundred boosts, plus it's a poem telling Twitter to fuck off :)

of course, to care about raw numbers of boosts or likes is to fundamentally miss the point of Mastodon... but if it helps alleviate the hesitation of people addicted to the engagement-metrics dopamine to escape to our world, all the better :)

@lifning
awsom! thx.
will be added to the list 'good night corporated silo plattforms'

@paulfree14 I have on average more interaction on Mastodo, than I had on Twitter. Probably because there is less noise over here.

@jeroenpraat I defianlty have better interactions, and that straight from the beginning.
And also more. On twitter you can find accounts having much more followers but less interactions.
Thought many have left it abondand.

@paulfree14 @jeroenpraat There is no way the user numbers are as great as Twitter claims them to be.

Of course, they are still big, but I think the attention they're getting is more reflecting on the types of people using (journalists, celebrities) rather actual usage.

@jeroenpraat @loke
...that tweets being regular linked in articles also drives a lot attention.
So yes journalists and celebreties.

@loke @paulfree14 All social network have a large percentage of inactive users. Also on Mastodon.

@jeroenpraat @paulfree14 Of course. But I don't think anyone actually counts the inactive users on Mastodon. It's not like there is any stock price depends on it.

@loke @paulfree14 That's true, but when people say Mastodon has almost a million users, you have to keep this in mind:

1. minus a large percentage of inactive users (like on all social networks)
2. minus a lot of people that have accounts on multiple instances
3. plus a few thousand people from other parts of the fediverse (GNU Social, Pleroma, Hubzilla, Friendica, etc.)

@jeroenpraat @paulfree14 That's true. It's not like I ever trusted those usage numbers anyway. I also have to admit that "reach" is not the reason I'm using it.

@jeroenpraat @paulfree14 Me too, but that's probably because I can't stand Twitter.

@paulfree14

sure, boosted, but ...

Are you quite sure we really want the kind of people that want all that reach?

I mean, yeah sure, you can reach a lot of people here, *but only if they want you to.*

There are those who really don't want to respect that. Mastodon should not be for them, surely?

@JensE yeah let' say it like this, I'm not tryn to bring those who are just looking for popularity to join.

But for example I'm missing journalists here.
Imagine one is doing an investigative research taking around 6 month.
Sharing your findings with the public is part of your work.
Beside newspaper etc. one is easly very dependend on twitter, facebook or VK.

The only reason I'm still using twitter is cause of journarlist being there.

@paulfree14

That's actually a very good answer, and I'm glad I boosted first and questioned after. :gentleblob:

I have a number of family members who have jobs in museums, and i must admit that I hesitate to recommend Mastodon to them because of reach.

Unless they want to run a museum-centric instance, because that would totally work.

For journalists too, I think?

@paulfree14 Oh by the way, I never boost/retweet when I'm asked to that, except when it's something with high priority or life threatening situation. I also never play games likely 'boost this if you agree, fav when you disagree'. Sorry 🙁 I'm probably very stubborn. 🤓

@paulfree14 @comradefox hehe, can you explain the slang? sorry different part of the fediverse ;-)
@comradefox und queeten war das, was man mit dem quitter interface auf GNUsocial macht wenn man etwas weiterleitet oder?
@tobias Ein Queef (bzw. "Queet") ist ein Post auf GNUsocial und "queeten" das Verb dazu.
@comradefox Ahh, ok queet ist Neusprech für dent. Super plus gut ;-)
@tobias @comradefox @paulfree14 so wird das nie was mit dem Fediverse, wenn jeder sein eigenes Fachchinesisch benutzt. Außer man möchte sehr elitär wirken und arrogant auf andere herunter blicken wollen. ;)

@paulfree14 we need to be collectively looking under the hood. i'm assuming a lot of people are on here...eh?
