Is there a chance encyption will be introduced to #ActivityPub at one point?
@zemmert @paulfree14 I'd probably start by explaining what you think it would be good for, rather than diving in with a proposal. Then let people talk about it. There may be another way to get what you want, without changing activitypub.
Easy way to start discussion is raise an issue at https://github.com/w3c/activitypub/issues ...
Or maybe just say it here.
@sandro @paulfree14 What I'm personally hoping for is E2E encrypted messaging between users
@zemmert @paulfree14 Ah, yes. That would be nice.
Groups, or just two people?
Are our instances "ends", or does it have to be our clients? (Servers need to be trusted anyway with the webapp UIs, and already have key system)
Do you want to try to hide the metadata (who, when, length of messages) or just the text itself?
Right now, if both instances are well maintained and on tor using onion addresses for each other, I expect you have very good privacy.
@sandro @paulfree14 I was thinking client-to-client encrypted messaging with minimal exposed metadata (probably only sender and receiver). And the main problem with Tor is that it's super slow, and it's possible that the CIA/NSA/FBI/Department of Agriculture controls a large number of exit nodes.
@zemmert @paulfree14 my understanding is exit nodes are not an issue with onion addresses
@sandro @paulfree14 This is the case for onion addresses, but the idea that it's there has the potential to draw people away from Tor in general
@paulfree14 It has yet to be developed, but you're more than welcome to go for it: https://www.w3.org/wiki/ActivityPub_extensions
