the local timeline shows the messages from the comunity at todon.nl (that's where you are)
The federate timeline shows all messages from ppl that someone on your instance follows.
have you used tweetdeck before? That's from the design very much the same then mastodon.
You can search for hashtags of your interest, and also pin them.
Looking around and follow a few ppl you might like to read more from will step by step let create you a nice personal homeline.

The fediverse containes out of multible plattforms that can comunicate with each other.
Mastodon, that's what you're using is one of them. Todon.nl is a mastodon instance.
As known from twitter you can follow people to resieve their posts in your timeline. But they don't have to be at todon.nl. Just need to be part of the fediverse.
A great way to start is using the hashtag #introduction
