some of the most prolific books of our time are aimed at younger audiences but still cover mature topics and there's good reason for that
kids desire more serious topics, problems to solve, and more juicy information to learn and absorb. adults desire more imagination, fun, adventure, escapism.
combine the two and you've got something that near anyone can enjoy. general audience media is often the best from what i've seen.
kids are allowed to have fun and use their imagination and play, while adults always have to be working in some capacity. adult hobbies are all basically just another form of work.
but we seriously do need to have fun, even as adults. we're not just meant to work our whole lives. we shouldn't be forcing ourselves to uphold some kind of image of a "productive member of society" as if that's the only thing that matters
and even then, fun and imagination are extremely important tools

my art mentor once told me that the 2 main components of art are: form (aesthetics) and function (concept). the success of a work of art is determined by how well its elements work together, even if it is misinterpreted differently by the viewer. i would like to propose a third element: access-ability. a work is only as good as how it can be perceived + how it 'looks'/feels/tastes/whatever the medium + its function. duchamp always said that the viewer informs the work - except the viewer doesn't without a vehicle to inform the work through. the quality of that vehicle (the gallery, the webpage, the artist statement, whatever you are using to drive it) informs the viewer who informs the work who informs the function who informs the aesthetic form in the first place who informs the artist, and vice versa. 3-D art-making, vs. 2-D art making. we need to be aware of this especially in (nu) media art. institutional critique of gallery spaces has existed since they did. the gallery/museum has rotten roots - and so does the roots of social media, as we've just learned with facebook. if your work runs through a rotten foundation, even just to get noticed, that detrimentally affects your work itself (and you). performance anxiety/ plaguing perfectionism/ shitty critique and attacks on character... a lack consent to see the work there (there is no choice but to see it there. yuck.) i was recently connected with a man teaching at a uni who does VR. i've just made my first VR film. he said "yuck VR films are the worst, use x and y program to make them games and buy this $400 headset and your work will become legit" and i was like FUCK YOU, rando guy. idk what i expected. the vehicle of my art is my phone that i paid good money for already just for vr + my shitty headset + you could just watch it on youtube lmao. are your vids not downloadable? tl;dr IF YOUR ART IS NOT ACCESS-ABLE, IT IS NOT GOOD ART. unless it is to subvert the entire idea of accessibility in art, unless it is institutional critique, why is it so hard to access??? why is it accessible to so few, in so few ways??? why can't i cut it up and fold it into a paper airplane and chuck it out the window? isn't that art? if no-one can build utop your art (including concepts, ESPECIALLY CONCEPTS) then how is it art???
